Nominated for her first and only studio album – last year’s Christmas Don’t Be Late – Thomas said she was taken entirely by surprise when she found out her name was included in the 2022 list of nominees.

“This is my first full-length album that I ever made and I was so excited when I got nominated,” said Thomas, who turned 18 earlier this year. “I knew the date when they were announcing the nominees, but I submitted it early this year and I wasn’t really expecting to actually get nominated. I didn’t really think about it, and then I thought about it again and I was sitting in music class when I saw my name and album cover come across on the nominations video that they did.”

While Thomas was working on her album last year, many Stratford residents were introduced to the young musician through her weekly Dock Music concerts, where she performed from her family’s small dock on Lake Victoria every Sunday over the past two summer as a pandemic-friendly way to perform live for the community.

Her album, which was released in time for Christmas last year, is a collection of holiday songs performed with a number of local vocalists, including Thomas’s dad, Dale Thomas.

“This nomination is incredible to me. I don’t even know how to explain it,” she said. “It feels awesome that I’m being recognized by big music people who think my album is worthy of being nominated, so I’m super excited.”

Thomas is also excited to attend the Canadian Folk Music Awards ceremony in Charlottetown, P.E.I. from April 1 to April 3. She said she’s hoping to meet her fellow nominees and others who work in the music industry.
